Generally speaking you cut the outer jacket of the insulation approximately 1-1/2" and you strip the inner conductors at a 1/4", and so a 1/4" long ferrule would be what you want if you're using them. There is not much of an advantage to using ferrules unless it is a very high vibration environment. DIN 43650 connectors are very forgiving. The other key is to make sure the diameter of the cable fits the range of the grommet so there is a water resistant fit and good strain relief.
