The main difference between M8, M12, and M23 connectors is the size of the mating thread. M8 connectors have M8 size mating thread, M12 connectors have M12 size mating thread, and so on. Another difference is the pin counts. M8 connectors have 3, 4, or 6 pins, M12 connectors have 2-12 pins, and M23 connectors have 6-19 pins (although the most common are 12 or 19 pins).
