A momentary push button is only activated, or on, while it is pressed. A maintained push button remains in the same state, whether activated or not, until it is pressed. Once pressed it changes state and remains in that new state until it is pressed again. In terms of selector switches, a momentary selector switch will automatically return to a default position once turned. A maintained selector switch will stay in the same position until it is turned, and will remain in that new position until it is turned back.
